Fitch officially out of Penn rematch

The UFC has confirmed Jon Fitch is out of his welterweight rematch with BJ Penn due to a shoulder injury.

Fitch and Penn had been set to renew acquaintances after their UFC 127 main event ended in a controversial draw. The bout was scheduled for UFC 132 in July, but Fitch has been forced off the Las Vegas card.

Currently the UFC has only confirmed Fitch's injury, and not whether Penn will be given a new opponent, but sources close to the Hawaiian's camp say Penn is likely to be pulled altogether.

The Fitch v Penn bout is seen as a key encounter in establishing the welterweight hierarchy, with champion Georges St-Pierre seemingly without a challenger if he beats Jake Shields in April.
